Championing Founder-Led Growth
During college, I enjoyed building and managing a business, which inspired my passion for entrepreneurship. To truly understand how founders worked, I began my professional journey at Vista Point Advisors, an investment bank serving as the first external partner to bootstrapped software startup founders. As an entrepreneur, the idea of having an advisor who prioritizes your best interest resonates with me.
Eventually, I found my true passion in guiding founders of early-stage, post-product-market-fit companies to accelerate business growth.
Development in AI presented new opportunities to help founders scale their companies while being capital-efficient. Driven by the gap in the funding market and a desire to support founders, I founded Supercruise Capital Management, a growth equity fund backing bootstrapped companies ready to scale after achieving product-market fit.
Aligning Growth with the Founder’s Strategy
Venture and growth equity funds exceeding $1 billion have steadily increased, with a notable rise during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. While some startups, such as Facebook and OpenAI, scale quickly due to both funding and a receptive market, many companies are undone by the misalignment with these mega funds. In a world where ambition, not capital, is the barrier, we saw an opportunity to build a new type of investment firm.
There is also a fundamental tension in the startup ecosystem as founders often prioritize steady, profitable growth while investors push for rapid scaling. Depending on the situation, founders may want to grow at a slower pace while staying cash-flow positive, pursue strategic exits or bring in private equity to support the next stage.
Our goal is to deeply understand each of our businesses and offer unconflicted advice and guidance, depending on the situation of each company. We align ourselves with founders and teams, creating better relationships and more constructive outcomes.
Balancing AI Innovation and Risk
Excitement around AI is at an all-time high, and it is shaping our investment approach. Driven by tremendous innovation and massive investment, AI’s downstream effects include the development of new products and capabilities. It also entails the risk of over-scaling before demand materializes, resulting in unused infrastructure and wasted capital.
Through AI integration, companies can achieve more with smaller teams, fueling investor optimism that greater efficiency will expand market potential.
Envisioning Scalable AI Growth
In the short term, lower entry barriers and increased investment will boost the number of startups, forcing them to strengthen their value propositions to stand out.
In the long run, my enthusiasm centers on seeing high-quality foundational models of the robustly financed, hyper-scaling companies. With their capabilities and resources, they can deliver technology that impacts industries at national and global levels. As these models improve, I expect to see more creative founders build on them and push the limits of their capabilities. We will see an entirely new wave of products and services emerge, mirroring the years following AWS’s launch.
